Cities

Cities: Essay Question

Consider the view that cities of the future need to be designed very differently from the ones we know today.

Yes, cities need to be designed differently:

  • The modern cities of the 21stcentury are a true testament to the progress of mankind.
  • With the influx of immigrants entering our countries, new cities will have to be built to accommodate all of their needs.
  • Cities of the future have to incorporate the technological advances of the present innovations for example: advances in farming technology like vertical farming.
  • Due to environmental changes and the impact of global warming, future cities would be different because most of them will be constructed inland. Cities of the future will need to be built and designed to withstand environmental disasters.

No, cities do not need to be designed differently:

  • The cities of the future need not be designed completely differently but would require only minor changes.
  • While this modern architecture and technological advances could be easily implemented in developed countries, developing countries could have a problem in designing for the future.
  • The widening gap between the haves and have-nots will be accentuated in the megacities of the future. Such inequalities, when left unchecked, will destabilize society and upend any benefits of urban development.
  • Cities will increase in size and their populations become more diverse. Governing these cities will, therefore, be progressively complex and require the most dedicated of minds.
