Given the endless possibilities of medical technology, people would expect it to cure all ailments, which may lead to negative repercussions, posing a threat to patients, their families and the medical community.

 

Yes, people are placing too much faith in medical science

  • The advances in medical science has led people to adopt a lackadaisical attitude towards their medical health. This could be attributed to the overconfidence that people have placed in medical science.
  • The risky consequences associated with cosmetics surgeries that people regularly gamble on only serve to prove that medical science is unrealistically viewed as a panacea to all problems.
  • Research is newer areas like stem-cell therapy, cloning, organ transplants that are experimental at best. The results have been inconsistent and the procedures not widely accepted by the medical community.

 

No, people are not placing too much faith in medical science 

  • Medical science has successful identified the causes of these diseases and destroyed the carriers of such bacteria and viruses, this has saved lives of many people and therefore, faith of people in medical science is justified.
  • Medical science promoted a healthy lifestyle and good public health and hygiene, supported by clean drinking water and modern sanitation. Such measures and lifestyle changes have reduced the diseases and illnesses that are still prevalent in third world countries.
  • People today consult their family doctors when they are ill, knowing that modern medicine and drugs are very effective in treating their common ailments.
