Linking words and Expressions

Using linking words helps you to make yourself understood more easily, make shorter sentences and improve the connections and transitions between thoughts. It also helps if you can structure your ideas into a clear beginning, middle and end.

There are various uses and types of linking words, here are some of the examples:

  • Addition - also, again, as well as, besides, furthermore, in addition, likewise, moreover
  • Restatement - in essence, in other words that, is to say, in short, in brief, to put it differently
  • Consequence - accordingly, subsequently, as a result, therefore, for this reason, consequently, hence, otherwise so then
  • Generalising - as a rule as usual, for the most part, generally, generally speaking, ordinarily, usually
  • Exception - extremely, terribly, completely, utterly, side from, besides, except, excepting, excluding, other than, outside of, save
  • Exemplifying - especially, chiefly, for instance, in particular, namely, including, specifically, such as
  • Illustration - for example, for instance, for one thing, as an illustration, illustrated with, as an example, in the case
  • Contrast - extremely, terribly, completely, utterly by the same, token, conversely, instead, likewise, on one hand, on the other hand, on the                  contrary, rather, similarly, yet, but, however, still, nevertheless, in contrast
  • Similarity - extremely, terribly, completely, utterly, comparatively, correspondingly, identically, likewise, similar, together with
  • Emphasis - chiefly, above all, with attention to, especially, particularly, singularly
  • Sequence - At first to begin at the same time/ simultaneously, for now, the next step, in conclusion, in turn, next/then/after, with this in mind, In         the meantime, meanwhile
  • Summarising - extremely, terribly, completely, utterly, after all, all in all, all things, considered, briefly, by and large, in any case, in any event, in
    brief, in conclusion, on the whole, in short, in summary, in the final analysis, in the long run, on balance, to sum, up, to summarise, finally
  • Diversion - By the way, incidentally
  • Direction - extremely, terribly, completely, utterly, here, there, over there, beyond, nearly, opposite, under, above, to the left, to the right, in the         distance
