Opinion Essays

What is an opinion essay?

An opinion essay is a formal piece of writing which requires you to write your opinions on a particular issue. The opinion about the issue can be positive or negative. However, you need to back your arguments and opinions by using relevant examples and explanations. Before starting an opinion essay, it is important to get a good grasp of the topic you choose to write on. You also need to brush up on definitions, essay requirements and structure. For this, you can refer to various opinion essays which could prove highly  beneficial

A successful opinion essay should have:

  1. An introductory paragraph in which you state the topic and your opinion.
  2. Main body which consists of several paragraphs, each presenting a separate viewpoint supported by reason. You also include a paragraph presenting opposing viewpoint and reason why you think it is an unconvincing viewpoint; and
  3. Conclusion in which you summarise or restate your opinion using different words.

Some essay topics ask whether you agree or disagree with an argument. In this case, you have to either agree or disagree. You cannot agree with the given topic in one paragraph and disagree with it in the next paragraph. If you don’t have a strong opinion, you can ‘partly’ agree, but you must still have a clear stand on the topic.
