Paragraph Writing

Writing Topic Sentences

Topic sentences are required so that the ideas you want to present can be organised. Creating a topic sentence for your introductory paragraph and supporting paragraphs is an essential part of academic writing. Learning how to write effective topic sentences can help you present your main idea and supporting information clearly to your audience.

1. Here are some points which could help you write a good topic sentence.

Have a thesis statement. You need to know what your paper or essay is about to determine the topic sentences. Construct a thesis statement before beginning to write.

2. Write an outline for your essay

Before writing it is important to lay the ideas on paper. You need to write your points so that you know which paragraph will support your thesis statement and the evidence you will include in each paragraph.

3. Be clear and coherent

A topic sentence should be clear and easy to understand so the reader knows the main idea of the paragraph.

4. Make your topic sentence complex or compound

Compound and complex sentences make topic sentences sound stronger and more high-level. Create a compound sentence with two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction and a comma. Compose a complex sentence with a subordinate clause and an independent clause joined by a comma and a subordinating conjunction.
